Originally the path used by Buddhist monks to traverse from temple to temple a thousand years ago, the Kumano Kodo trail is a UNESCO World Heritage Site open for avid hikers. Don't be surprised if you do in fact pass a monk on the trail as it's still used today as a rite of passage for many.
